Critical Reflection: Question 1

Media Studies - Madison Burns - P6

Question: How does your product challenge conventions?

My magazine, Zonfrilli, challenges gender-related fashion norms and pushes the boundaries of what is considered ‘socially-acceptable’ fashion by the public. Inspired greatly by the works of widely-acclaimed couture designers from around the world---Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Iris van Herpen, to name a few---Zonfrilli takes normal, every-day fashion choices and turns it upside-down, inside-out, and creates works of art. Many of the normal fashion choices we make--men wearing suits, women wearing dresses, etc…--are as a result of societal conditioning that we’ve all experienced from birth. Zonfrilli intends to shock, awe, and disturb as it blurs the line between masculine and feminine, between reality and illusion. As a designer, I aim to influence not only this generation--but all future generations to come--to throw away our traditional chains and live in an era of freedom and gender-liberation.
