Q: How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My magazine uses typical editorial conventions, such as minimalistic text, bold colors, and an emphasis on simplicity through modernity. While I didn't create my cover and table of contents with the intent of representing any current social issues, I believe that it can be used to show the new wave of inclusivity and diversity in modern fashion magazines. For a long period of time, women of all body types and skin tones only saw one type of woman on the cover of a magazine: the typical hourglass-shaped, thin, pale, blonde and blue-eyed caricature. The idea that these women were the pinnacle of beauty (i.e: the beauty standard,) was and still is very damaging to many young women and girls who do not fit that exact mold. By seeing someone of different skin tones, of different hair textures, of different facial features on the cover of a magazine challenges that 'standard.'
Q: How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My magazine would most likely engage with audiences interested in learning more about the fashion world by introducing creative concepts and upcoming designers with bold takes on modern fashion. If this were a real magazine I would definitely have an online version and a paper version, most likely advertised in department stores or in an online marketplace.
